Marks and Spencer Business in the Community

On Monday 10th February 2014, a group of fourth year students along with Ms. McCarthy and Ms. O'Leary visited Marks and Spencers in Killarney as part of the Business in the Community programme. It was a fantastic morning where the students got to see first hand the life of a product including the stores of M&S. They were also divided up into teams to dress a mannequin for a Valentines date on friday!! It was good fun and well done to Brian and Laura who won the best dressed Mannequin. The next stage of this programme will involve the students developing their CV while also participating in a Mock Interview with M&S manager Mr. Paul Daly

Science Trip - Engineering Ireland Week

On Tuesday 11th February 2014, our cohort of enthusiastic 2nd year Science students (along with a smattering of first years) set out for Tralee as part of Engineering Ireland Week. The visit was at the invitation of "Eirgrid" and the venue Siamsa Tire, National Theatre. The show lasted approximately an hour and a half and held the students attention with Ciaran McClarence (1st Year) being treated to a hair-raising experience on the Van de Graff Electrostatic Generator Titled from "Powergrid to Playstation". Students were shown the connection between Magnetic Fields and Electric Fields. Also demonstrated was the need to harness our most natural resources wind and water for future Electiricity generation. Students were treated to a display of Morse Code along with the interesting statistic that a MRI Scanner costs €65,000 for a hospital to purchase while the "Kinect Sensor" for the "Xbox 360" costs €80 to carry out a similar "3D" scan of the body, hence the show's title "Powergrid to Playstation". At the show's finale, a student and teacher from each of the five schools present were invited in turn to pedal a modified bicycle connected to a power/wattage meter. In this tournament Klaus and Jake Quinn (2nd Year) performed powerfully to finish in 2nd place to the combined team from "Colaiste Na Sceilge". Overall both an educational and enjoyable evening was had by all. Many Thanks to Ms. O. Brosnan, Ms. M. Spillane, Mr. S. O'Connell, Klaus and Liz for both organising the trip and accompanying our "enlightened" second year group.

3rd Year C.S.P.E. class explore the Right to Education

On Friday 7th March, students from the 3 Siofra Class in Killarney Community College presented €300 to Mr. Eddie Sheehy from the Kenya Education Project. Students had raised the funds for the charity thanks to a Christma...s Quiz which took place on the last day of the 2013 school term. Prizes for the event where denoted by the schools staff. Students completed the activity as part of their C.S.P.E. action project for the Junior Cycle under the guidance of their teacher Ms. D. O’ Sullivan. The Kenya Education project set up by local man Eddie Sheehy has had a strong connection with the school since its foundations. Students over the past number of years have learned about the lack of Education in Kenya and have raised money on an annual basis to help. The Schools teachers have also set an example for their students with Business teacher Ms .O’ Leary having gone to Kenya to teach during a Summer period. While P.E teacher Mr. O Reilly even donated his beloved sports jerseys to the charity. This year’s sum of €300 raised by students will ensure that education is provided for one Primary School child and one Secondary School child in Kenya. Over the course of their project students learned about the living conditions and lack of education available to teenagers their own age in this African country. They gained a new found respect for the high standard of living they enjoyed not only in their home life but also for the high standard of Education they receive in school. They would like to thank Mr. Sheehy for taking his time to come in and speak to the class about his charities work. He spoke to the students prior to the orgaisation of the quiz in order to provide them with both information about life in Kenya but provided them with motivation to achieve their goal. They would also like to thank Carmella the schools Guidance Councillor and Mr. O Reilly for their vital role in helping to organise the event. Having completed the challenge of organising a whole school event successfully, the class of 3 Siofra now realise how lucky they are to have the right to education.
