1st Year Anthology Book Launch

The KCC English Anthology was an initiative that encouraged every first year student within the school to produce their own book. Each student was required to pen a short story, poem, piece of descriptive writing and research an Irish writer. Students all wrote a small drama as a class and acted it out amongst their peers. By the end of the process every student had produced their own book and can claim they are now published authors! a selection of stories, poems and descriptive samples were then complied to create an overall anthology. The aim of the initiative was to encourage students to write more outside of school for fun and as a hobby. The students were helped by Kerry Writer Gabril Fitzmorris who gave a number of workshops and also helped to launch the book at the offical launch in the school on Monday 19th May 2014.

KCC launches the Transition Year Programme

This year saw for the first time ever the Transition Year programme introduced to the college.  The air of excitement around the college is contagious as both teachers students are fully engaged and looking forward to a tremendous year ahead.  The transition year programme is a unique one year programme that promotes the personal, social, vocational and educational development of students and prepares them for their role as autonomous, participative and responsible members of society. The college endeavours to promote academic skills with an emphasis on interdisciplinary and self directed learning.  TY provides a bridge to enable students to make the transition from the more dependent type of learning associated with junior cycle to the more independent learning environment associated with senior cycle.  It encourages the development of a wide range of transferable critical thinking and creative problem solving skills.  The students will also discover their individual talents, aptitudes and abilities and will learn a variety of new skills. Another element of the programme will involve preparing the students for the world of work by enabling them to develop skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.  The programme will be co-ordinated by Ms. Kerri McCarthy and Ms. Lorraine Crowley.  A huge amount of planning has been undertaken to ensure that it is a year that will allow our students to reach their full potential in their leaving certificate.  The TY programme will offer our students a broad and balanced curriculum with certification in many different modules at their end of year graduation.  According to Ms. Fiona O’Brien “We are delighted to be able to offer this new experience to our students. It is a great addition to the school programme and gives our students an opportunity to excel both academically and personally gaining knowledge and experience through the many different modules that are on offer throughout the school year.”
